Trip takers will engage in outreach at the Nia Davenport Medical Clinic at the Sports Outreach Resource Center and engage in relationship building opportunities with students at the Katwe Chess Academy. While in Kampala, we will incorporate a couple of local experiences at the local market and a cultural show.  The team will also have the opportunity to build relationships with the Sports Outreach team in Nairobi spending time engaging in sports, chess, and feeding experiences with the ministry in both Mukuru and Kibera slum projects. An additional component of this trip will center around planning and logistics for the 2026 Mountains for Medicine Capstone Bike Ride from Uganda to Nairobi.

Requirements

Prerequisites

  1. Passport- All team members will need to have an active passport to travel to Uganda. If an individual’s passport expires within SIX months of the return date, then he/she needs to plan to renew the passport. Passport information can be found on the US Department of State’s website (https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/passports.html)
  2. Yellow fever vaccination certificate
  3. Visa (to be registered for once flights are booked for the team and yellow fever vaccine is acquired)

Preparation

  1. It is important that you plan to make a visit with your local physician for guidance on medications and vaccinations in relation to your personal health. The trip health requirements/recommendations below are guided by the Center for Disease Control’s suggestions for travelers, which can be found in detail at https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/uganda
  2. Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry (needed at least 8 weeks prior to departure).
  3. A prescription for malaria prevention, which will need to be started prior to leaving and continue after returning home. The prescriptions used most often are Malarone and Doxycycline. Each member’s doctor will provide him or her with the best recommendation.
  4. Recommended vaccinations- Hepatitis A and B, Covid, Typhoid, filled prescription for an antibiotic (typically Ciprofloaxin) for possible stomach troubles
